In diesem Teil des großen Tannenwaldes, der seinen Namen einer 1669 gepflanzten Weißtanne zu verdanken hat, erholten sich die Landgrafenfamilie. Gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Caroline erschuf Friedrich V. Ludwig den herrlichen Waldpark als grünes Refugium am Ende der Tannenwaldalle. Die einst lichte Waldzone zeigt sich heute dicht bewachsen. Besonders sehenswert sind die Landgrafensäule (eine Kopie) auf dem „Rond Point“ und das Pferdegrab, das Friedrich V. Ludwig 1773 für sein geliebtes Pferd Magyar errichten ließ. Als Zeitzeuge des vorromantisch-sentimentalen Landschaftsgartens soll der pittoreske Charakter des Lustwaldes, soweit möglich, wiederhergestellt werden.
