1718 erbaut, wurde die Jakobskirche 1724 als französisch-reformierte Kirche eingeweiht und im 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Fertigstellung der St. Marienkirche 1895 von der katholischen Gemeinde genutzt. Nach zehnjährigem Leerstand erwarb die Homburger Turngemeinde (HTG) das Gebäude und ließ es 1905 vom Louis Jacobi zur Turnhalle umbauen. Als solche wurde das Gebäude mehr als 100 Jahre genutzt. Im Oktober 2012 erwarb die Galerie Scheffel den denkmalgeschützten Sakralbau zusammen mit seinem Anbau und dem angrenzenden Garten als Ausstellungsstandort. Nach mehrjähriger Kernsanierung und aufwändigen Umbau- und Restaurierungsarbeiten am gesamten Gebäudekomplex wurde 2016 der neue Kunstraum der Galerie Scheffel unter dem Namen Jakobshallen eröffnet.
